A Little White Rock Lake History
White Rock Lake wasn't originally created as a recreational destination.
In the early 1900s, Dallas was a rapidly growing city and needed a more reliable water supply. The city purchased land for the lake in 1910, construction of the dam and spillway was completed in 1911, and the lake was filled several years later. It eventually became an important part of Dallas' water infrastructure.
As Dallas continued to grow, however, White Rock Lake was no longer sufficient to meet the city's water needs. Additional water sources were developed, and White Rock gradually transitioned from a municipal water resource into the recreational destination Dallas residents know today.
The lake also has some fascinating chapters in its history. During the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps workers helped develop many of the park's early amenities and infrastructure. During World War II, part of the lake became the site of a temporary prisoner-of-war camp for German soldiers.
Today, White Rock Lake is one of Dallas' most beloved outdoor spaces—and one of the city's most heavily used parks. More than a century after its construction, it has become an important part of the lifestyle of the neighborhoods surrounding it.
